I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break! I am excited that we are starting the new quarter, and we will be kicking this next quarter off with some fun!
Or leadership trait for October is Integrity. Take the opportunity to talk about it at home with your child. In math, we will be working on Lessons 31-35 this week - Lines, angles, shapes, rounding, long-division, and word problems about time. As always, you can access the lessons and the answer sheet on our class website (sshutto.weebly.com) just click on the Math Lessons link. We are staring a unit on poetry in CKLA. This is going to be such fun! If you have a favorite poem, please share it with our class! We also get to dive into another Science unit - this one about plants and animals. I am looking for some volunteers to help us out! *Is anybody interested in decorating the door to our classroom with a great Halloween theme? We are having a school wide contest! The winning grade level will get a popcorn party. We will have parents judging the doors and they are looking for creativity, participation and effort. *We also need a volunteer who is willing to coordinate our Halloween class party. There will be no spelling words this week, but our second quarter book report assignments will be going home.

Good afternoon marvelous parents!
The next week and a half are going to be fun in many ways! Math: In Math, we begin long-division this week. Please continue to work with your student in multiplication as knowing our multiplication is so important to understanding division. Language Arts: In CKLA, we continue to read and learn about the Middle Ages. We will begin our presentations on the book reports tomorrow. The students are very excited about their presentations, and I cannot wait to see them all! Our reading logs for September are due on Friday. They must be signed by a parent or guardian to count. If they are not signed, they will not be accepted and will have to be turned in for a late grade. Spelling: Our spelling list is a little longer this week, and as we don't have a list next week, we will take the test for today's list next Wednesday. Please help your student learn these words. We will be doing spelling activities most days in class, but at home reinforcement is always a great way to help them retain! Science: In science, we have started a unit on engineering. In addition to engineering our own products, we will be able to take turns programming a robotic car. We will be engineering a device to solve a problem in the classroom this week, and next week, we will design crash safety devices for eggs. To that end, I am asking that you send in any materials you may have to go toward our experiments. This could include: empty boxes (cereal, amazon, granola bar, etc) cardboard empty, dry water bottles bubble wrap plastic bags string or yarn toilet paper or paper towel tubes egg cartons newspaper anything else you think of or have on hand that could help our students engineer a product! If you have anything to send in, do so as soon as possible so we can use the materials this week as well as next week. And, keep sending it in! Next week is a short week. Thursday is a half day and Friday is our first day of fall break. Have a wonderful week! We will! Hello wonderful families! This next week is going to be very exciting!
Bright and early Monday morning parent/student/teacher conferences begin. I ask that you and your student arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled time so that we will have no delays. Your student will be leading the conference, sharing their personal mission statement, their academic goal, and their test scores (up to last Wednesday). It will be great practice for each and every student to lead a discussion about themselves and the things important to them. In addition to parent/student/teacher conferences, we will be starting a new unit in CKLA - The Middle Ages. We continue working on multiplication and word problems in math, and will begin taking a look at fractions. Our next math test is this next Thursday. We are going to have so much fun as we begin our first science unit this week. As a reminder, book reports are due September 26. If you have any questions about them, please feel free to email me or check out our class website which has all the information you should need: http://sshutto.weebly.com/quarterly-book-reports.html I hope you have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you all at conferences! Respect is our Leadership trait of the month. Agendas should be filled out every day in class. We will list homework, announcements and reminders. Please sign the agenda EACH NIGHT. This is a communication tool between class and school. Feel free to write me a note in the agenda if you have a question or a comment. We will continue to work on our multiplication automaticity. In the Saxon program we will: work on word problems, lines, number lines, tally marks, multiplication, adding and subtracting money and making a multiplication table. We will complete most of our math assignments in class. If an assignment is not finished in class, it will need to be finished at home. You can find the Saxon lessons on our class website. Homework is worth 10 points a day. One assignment is chosen every week to be graded for 30 points. Missing homework may be turned in, but will begin to lose 20% each day late. Keep plugging away at those reading logs as they are due this Thursday. Remember, the time you spend reading the autobiography or biography chosen for the book report counts for your reading hours. We have just begun brainstorming our personal narratives. This week we will continue to work through the writing process to complete them. The students have worked hard to come up with an interesting topic and think of descriptive details to use in their writing. This week we will be moving on from maps and exploring the world's mountains. Reminders:
Yea! The first two weeks are behind us and we are settling into a routine. Your children are working hard, and it is showing in their grades! If you have not yet signed up for IC (Infinite Campus), please be in touch with the front office to get started (480-988-3204). The IC is a wonderful tool, and will keep you up to date on your child's grades and progress.
Respect is our Leadership trait of the month. Every Friday, your children are going to a Leadership class for specials - be sure to ask what they do and have learned! Agendas will be filled out every day in class. We will list homework, announcements and reminders. Please sign the agenda EACH NIGHT. This is a communication tool between class and school. Feel free to write me a note in the agenda if you have a question or a comment. This week we, in math, will be studying the relationship between addition and subtraction, and solving word problems. Again, we will be working on our written practice daily in class. However, if we do not finish in class, that is when it comes home to be finished there. If your child forgets their math book, you can find the Saxon lessons on our class website: http://sshutto.weebly.com. Your child should be reading every night at home, but we know that sometimes life and family take precedence. So, as a 4th grade, we are asking for 10 hours by the end of the month. Please help your child remember to fill out the log! Book report assignments were been sent home. Please help your student remember to pick someone they want to read about and CLEAR IT WITH ME! They can begin reading their biography/autobiography today! Any reading done for this assignment will, of course, go towards the monthly reading log. In Language Arts, we will continue to learn about descriptive writing and how authors use details to help us understand their stories. We will also continue to focus on map skills this week. Reminders:
We are going to have a wonderful 3rd week! It was SO much fun getting to meet so many of you at back to school night! For those of you who were unable to make it, please email me if you'd like a chance to meet and we can arrange a time to get together.
This upcoming week is going to be exciting as we get to know each other and talk about the expectations for the year. I would encourage all my students to be thinking about what they want to accomplish this year, whether it's become a better writer, excel at turning homework, achieving perfect attendance, or improving in math. One of the activities we will be doing this week is to set personal and class goals. We will also be composing personal mission statements! We are going to ease ourselves gently into math this year, beginning with a review of problem solving. This first week, we will also begin the first two lessons, and start working in the PowerUp workbook. A great thing to be working on with your student the next few weeks would be multiplication facts 0, 1, 5, and 10. In ELA (English/Language Arts) we will begin an exploration of personal narrative. I'm really excited about this unit. I will be reading Roald Dahl's autobiography "Boy" to the kids during this unit, and I know they are going to love this book as much as I do! Reading logs will go home Monday and are a month-long endeavor. We are asking kids to read at least 10 hours a month, and want a parent to sign off on their progress. Reading logs can record time the student spends reading individually, as well as parent or sibling reads. If you are reading a book to your child, document it! Any additional time spent reading (above the 10 required hours) will go towards joining the class reading club. Being part of the reading club is not a requirement, but it is encouraged. We will have 4 benchmarks in the club, each with it's own prizes to pick from. My students really enjoyed it last year! Let me take a moment to discuss homework. First, with the exception of reading, we will not have homework the first week of school. Beginning the second week (August 15) of school, Monday through Thursday, there will be a math homework assignment; a spelling list will go home - practicing these words with your child will help them be successful at school; occasionally, there will be an ELA worksheet or additional assignment as homework. I am really looking forward to knowing each of you, and your child in my classroom. Have a great weekend, and I'll see you Monday |
